Terminated 31 December 2025 — no grandfather clause.
Every HVAC contractor is having a version of the same conversation. A homeowner read something about a federal tax credit. The something was true when it was written. It is not true now, and the contractor is the one who has to say so.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed 4 July 2025, terminated §25C, §25D, §45L and §179D. This chapter covers exactly what ended, what survived, and the language for the conversation — because a great deal of confidently written material describing these credits as available is still in circulation and still ranking well in search.
What survived is the part most contractors have not caught up with. HEAR and HOMES rebates were funded by appropriation rather than through the tax code, so the Act did not claw them back. State programs and utility rebates were never touched. For an income-qualified household the amounts can exceed what §25C offered.
The chapter closes with the one thing to do this filing season: pull your 2025 job files, because customers who had qualifying equipment installed last year can still claim on their 2025 return, and their preparers will be calling you for model numbers and AHRI certificates through the spring.
